Create Simple Materials in 3ds max Part 1 - Glass

Every aspect that goes into creating a 3D render is equally important. Perfectly modelling an object alone wont make the picture perfect, giving that particular object the right look and feel, will make it beautiful. Yes the textures or materials used to paint the object, is more important as it gives the sense of reality.

Every 3d artist would like to render a car, as it involves lot of materials and maps and above all a lot of raytracing. Creating a raytraced material in 3ds max is simple, which is difficult to a beginner. That too to create a car paint, chrome or a see through glass with raytracing. In this tutorial we are going to create exactly those three materials.

First lets create a simple glass that can be used for car windows or headlight.

Create Simple glass material in 3dsmax.

1. Open your 3ds max material editor. (press m)

2. Then select a material slot and name it glass, and under Shader Basic and Blinn Basic parameters use the following settings. ( Ref Pic )

Shader Basic Parameter

  • enable 2-sided

Blinn Basic Parameter

  • Opacity - 32
  • Specular Level -  92
  • Glossiness - 36
